This beautiful book compiles James Northfield's most prominent work. Spanning his entire career, it includes detailed reproductions of his various wartime posters, advertisements and in later life, paintings.
Indeed, Northfield is an important part of Australian art and advertising history. Described as 'Australia's most capable poster artist' by the Art Training Institute of Melbourne, it was his background as a colour lithographer and his excellent sense of design that enabled him to prosper from the remarkable growth of advertising in Australia following the First World War.
He produced an vast body of work during his active years (1920s to 1950s) as a commercial Australian artist, including travel posters, recruiting and peace bond posters, designs for many iconic products and for national events and centeneries. On retirement, he pursued his love of fine art and began exploring new mediums.
Unfortunately, despite the fact that the imagery he created assisted in formulating what we now see today as the 'Australian Identity', Northfield is virtually unknown for his work. But, we love him anyway... some talent is just too good to pass up!
